Hi nick,
Objective of SNP plan is to do a rough cut / medium term planning, where as objective of PPDS is to do an accurate / short term planning.
To be able to come up with a plan which is executable at shop floor we need planning within a day.
Minimum bucket for SNP plan is day, by design SNP can't plan in less then a day bucket, but with PPDS planning accurate to the second level is possible.
The strengths of PP/DS planning are its consideration of sequence-dependent setup activities and restrictions that apply to the generation of production orders that can be produced, so basically PPDS can provide us with an plan which is executable at shop floor.
This is the reason to convert SNP orders to PPDS orders.
Rgds
