Hello Kumaravel,

This issue is know for AS400 servers that not for Windows 2003, I can not find anything relative to this issue.

Did you try the workaround given in the log?** create file C:\Program Files\sapinst_instdir\SOLMAN\SYSTEM\MSS\CENTRAL\AS\MAC_ADDRESS

    • with hostname and mac address in the following format: **

    • rockcrystal xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

Best regards,

I have seen this error once on a box, where some monitoring agent was installed and the path for the agent tools was put in front of %SYSTEMROOT%.

If you execute "ipconfig /all" as <sid>adm, do you see a

MAC ADDRESSE

entry?

Are you on a US english Windows 2003 maybe with MUI installed in your native language?

Hi Markus,

Thanks for your time. I did try out the work around of creating the file MAC_ADDRESS and giving the system address in the mentioned format with no luck. the Sapinst does not even identify that file and throws up again.

If I execute ipconfig/all, I do get the mac address which is the physical address (if I am not wrong).

The OS is Japanese Windows 2003 on a VMWare instance (My environment is in total Japanese). But I just changed the regional settings alone in control panel to ease out atleast to an extent.

Please help.

Thanks & Regards,

Note 362379 - Localized Windows & MUI Support for SAP Software on Windows says, that one should use "Us English Windows 2003" and add the MUI language (in your case japanese) . It also says, that it CAN be supported.

As far as I understand that trace, the system executes and

ipconfig /all

and parses the output for the string "MAC ADDRESSE".

Since you´re on a doublebyte codepage system, it may not find the expected string and thus fail looking up the hostname.

Another possibility may be, because your hostname is set to "localhost" it tries to find the MAC addresse for "localhost" - which is not existent.

What output do you get, if you open a command prompt and just enter

hostname

Hi Markus,

Thanks a bunch for your time. When I type hostname in command prompt, it does throw back the correct hostname in return.

I also tried a fresh install without continuing the old installation, but same place same error.

But I have installed the same SM 4.0 in other servers with Windows 2003 Japanese versions and those are up and running.

But this is a 32bit Windows on VMWare instance. Will that cause an issue?

But I have also installed ERP 2005 (only ABAP) on the same environment successfully.

Totally held back because of this issue. I also tried commenting the localhost line in the hosts file with no use. But when I type ipconfig/all it returns the correct mac address.

Thanks in advance.

...and those other instances run on VMWare too?

I don´t wanna discurage you - but I think you have only two options:

- install on the iron itself (omitting VMWare)

- try with an english version

- (use Linux smile)

That may be a bad interaction between the VM virtual network, your network adapter and what the sapinst/java is trying to do. If you have an english version of W2K3 I´d give it a try.

Since VMWare has only limited support (check 674851) you can try to open an OSS call under BC-OP-NT - maybe that error is known already.

Hi Markus,

Thanks for the inputs. The other instances are NOT in VM though. But the ones I installed in VM earlier worked well. This looks like a maze anyways. Unfortunately the environment is a typical japanese one and even the PC I use has no other choice except a japanese OS. Am sure convincing my client for a english windows would be out of question as there are lot many SAP servers running on japanese windows now. All the ERP 2005 systems are on Japanese.

But may be I can raise a ticket with SAP and see if the issue is known.

Thanks again for your efforts. Also will keep posted on any work around I get.

It's just the "underlying part", that is english. You install it in english and then add the japanese MUI-package. I doubt, that someone will even notice, that there is a difference. Additionally you will make support easier because SAP can logon in english and see error messages etc. in english without having the need to be translated.

Let me know what the support says

Hi Markus,

Before putting a message to SAP, as a last resort I disabled the VM network adapter and installed MS loopback adapter. But I got the same error at the same step. So finally I disabled DHCP, assigned a dummy static IP and logged as SIDadm user and continued the old installation. Now it just went through the UME configuration step. Wanted to update you of the same.

Juts one more doubt, like oracle listener, is there anywhere that MS SQL also will have the host, IP and Mac details registered so that after installation if I enbale my VM adapter will it create any issues to the installed application to work properly.???

Thanks a lot for your time.

It shouldn´t be a problem to disable MS loopback and giving the system a "real" network adapter - the service should handle that without issues.

Hi Sunil,
