Hi All,
For applying SP's to the Landscape which tool is the best option ?
I know that there are two tools:
1. SUM
2. SPAM
1.)SUM: SUM is the latest tool from SAP. It builds a shadow instance and do all the work in background and finally copies that instance to the present instance. So that it reduces the downtime of the system.
I have a doubt here, when the SUM is running can the users be logged in and do there daily routine ?
If the answer is yes, then I think SUM is the best option for applying SP's.

Sudhir Sadhu
Hello
It depends on the scale of patching. If this is a high level patching then SUM is the best choice.
If you go with SUM you have the option to create a shadow system and and get the SP's upgraded there.
The users will be able to work on the main system during this time until the downtime phase.
Also remember the Lock Development phase where the shadow system gets created and during this time no changes to the development objects (ABAP Workbench) are allowed into the system.
You will need to consider the system resources and space for the shadow system.
Additionally in SUM there is also an option to patch the system without creating a shadow instance.
If you select that then the patching process will be done on the main system and during this time there will lot of problems related to performance, user transactions getting dumped out which is normal during the patching process.

Hi Benjamin,
The system release and patch levels are like this. I am attaching some screenshots. There are EA_HR* software components also in the system.
For example, HR component is on 39, we have to get them to atleast 65+ patch level.
So, to get these to higher patch level, do I need to use SUM or SPAM ?
Good Day Sudhir
If we are upgrading the system, then we have to use SUM.
If we are applying support packs, then we need to use SPAM.
Kindly be aware that SUM is now officially the tool used for most of the SAP maintenance activities.
Have a look at these articles.
http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-25113
Note 1589311 - Replacements of outdated tools via SL Toolset
Like I mentioned before SUM gives you option to patch directly on the main system or by creating a shadow system.
For small scale patching there is no need to use SUM as it will be a waste of time and resources when you very well know that you can complete such an activity in a very short duration.
I suggest you to update the HR components using SUM.
You just need to create an stack file through Solution Manager and confirm the stack level there.
SUM is just a tool provided by SAP for these activities but internally it is working with the SPAM/SAINT/JSPM.

Hi Sudhir,
As per my experience you should go with SUM tool.
First of all you want to apply just SPS stack not any Enhancement Package. And use SUM tool as single system configuration(Without Shadow) not as Standard Configuration(With Shadow).
I am recommending you to go with Single system configuration because generally we Shadow should be used only in EHP's and Release upgrade.
If you use standard configuration(With Shadow) then total END to END (E2E) time will be more.
Or more conveniently you can use SPAM also.

Hi Sudhir,
When you are upgrading your system using SUM (equipped with the near-Zero Downtime Maintenance nZDM technology) end user can do their normal operation, It does the below deployment without downtime:
ABAP load generation (transaction SGEN)
Selected long-running after-import methods
Mass generation of enhancement and enqueue objects
Table structure adjustment including conversions, based on Record & Replay technique
Main import, based on Record & Replay technique
In step execution, it will ask for the downtime, which is normally very less, so that time you can ask your user to logoff from the system.

Hi Sudhir,
SUM would be the best tool to use to apply support packages for ABAP+Java now a days...Please refer the below document
http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-25113
The concept is quite same as SAPup and EHPI tool.
SAP merged all these tools into single tool which can be used for any kind of upgrade whether its version/EHP/support package.
Thanks,
Jagadish.

Hi Sudhir ,
Yes you can apply Support pack using SUM . And only during Downtime phase users are not able to login .
If There is major difference in Support pack , then you can go for SUM as SAP says it can reduce your downtime . But if there is not hugh differnece between stack , i will suggest go for SPAM .
Thanks
