NW 7.4 - ASCS installation error

Former Member

Hi

I just installed ASCS using a virtual hostname. The installation fails at the last step Start Central Services Instance.

When I start ascs, it gets started and I see the below process

g1xadm> startsap vhostname

Starting Startup Agent sapstartsrv

OK

Instance Service on host gilman started

-------------------------------------------

starting SAP Instance ASCS00

Startup-Log is written to /home/g1xadm/startsap_ASCS00.log

-------------------------------------------

/usr/sap/G1X/ASCS00/exe/sapcontrol -prot NI_HTTP -nr 00 -function Start

Instance on host gilman started

Process:

  g1xadm 8847492       1   0 17:08:34      -  0:00 sapstart pf=/usr/sap/G1X/SYS/profile/G1X_ASCS00_vhostname

  g1xadm 9044008 8847492   0 17:08:35      -  0:00 en.sapG1X_ASCS00 pf=/usr/sap/G1X/SYS/profile/G1X_ASCS00_vhostname

  g1xadm 9240632       1   0 17:08:24      -  0:00 /usr/sap/G1X/ASCS00/exe/sapstartsrv pf=/usr/sap/G1X/SYS/profile/G1X_ASCS00_vhostname -D

  g1xadm 9306186 8847492   0 17:08:35      -  0:00 ms.sapG1X_ASCS00 pf=/usr/sap/G1X/SYS/profile/G1X_ASCS00_vhostname

But sapcontrol - GetProcessList fails, hence the installation is failing at the last step.

g1xadm> sapcontrol -nr 00 -function GetProcessList

17.06.2013 17:10:09

GetProcessList

OK

name, description, dispstatus, textstatus, starttime, elapsedtime, pid

msg_server, MessageServer, GRAY, Stopped, , , 9306186

enserver, EnqueueServer, GRAY, Stopped, , , 9044008

I changed the message server ports, also we reboot the server, still the same issue.

we are in Aix os

Regards

Resolved, after remounting /proc file system in aix.  It was a problem with the file system /proc, which wasn't mounted properly

Please attach sapstart.log file from ASCS instance work directory. Also check status of message server and enqueue server at OS level.

In your posts I see different instance numbers for ASCS instance: 00 (in your first message), 01, 70. Can you explain this? Which instance number you used to ASCS installation?

Hi Sentil,

I have exactly the same issue. It's a NIMSH process which take over the port 3900.

You can check it by telnet to the host port 3900.

You can stop the NIMSH or just re-install your NW 7.4 using different port.

Achmad

Hello Senthil,

Check the contents of the folder /usr/sap/G1X/SYS/global/sapcontrol.

There, you should see only one file per instance of the G1X system.

Each filename will have some numbers separated by the underscore character ("_"), and it will end with the hostname (or virtual hostname) where the instance is running.

If you see duplicate files related to the ASCS instance, check out the SAP note 1873918, as its solution could also help you in this case.

Instance Service on host gilman started.   Is "gilman" also hostname of the system?  I'm curious to know if its picking up the wrong name when it is starting?

gilman is the physical hostname, but we used virtual hostname to install using sap_usehostname. parameter.

also our profile files has the virtual hostname

g1xadm> cdpro

g1xadm> ls -lrt
total 16
-rw-r--r--    1 g1xadm   sapsys         2441 Jun 17 16:29 G1X_ASCS00_vhostname
-rw-r--r--    1 g1xadm   sapsys          651 Jun 17 17:00 DEFAULT.PFL

You should have a sapinst_instdir/NW740 folder, if you navigate down to the log files that sap install is creating, review the newest time stamp files.

One of them should provide more information for you or the rest of scn to review and narrow down why the virtual name isn't working in your system.
