How can we move a pending inspection that's linked to Handling Units?

Good morning.

Our client has decentralized WM, HUs and an external warehouse which is set up as a different Plant in order to be able to manage transportation properly. But they often transfer from the factory to this external warehouse items which have been sampled but whose analysis isn't finished; if there were no WM or HUs involved, transaction QAC2 could be used to transfer the inspection lot (and its associated stock). Problem: if we try to perform the movement or transfer via MM or WM, we get the error that it has to be performed from QM; if we try to perform it via QM and since we're using HUs, it's also not possible. We've been searching for information on this subject but come up blank, we get information on performing these movements when HUs are not involved.

Do any of you know of a way to handle these movements when HUs are involved? Both warehouses are decentralized and managed by the same database; the HU identifier must stay the same during the move.

Thank you.

Did you try to change the indicator "insp. by HU" in material master insp. setup?

That indicator has to be on, that's the problem. If it didn't need to be on, we'd be able to do the move with QAC2.

Thank you.

Yeah.. QM doesn't play well with HU's quite yet.  🙂

I would suggest instead that you make your characteristics long-term characteristics, at least for those tests that won't be done until after you need to move out the material to the warehouses. (Hint:  Put short term characteristics in one operation, and long term characteristics in a second operation in the inspection plan.  Makes it easier for techs to understand what has to be done and when).

This allows you make the UD and or the stock postings and still come back later to complete the results on the missing characteristics.  You can also change the UD if needed.

The other option is to have all your stock to unrestricted stock, (set in the inspection type settings), which allow you to use the material however you need to.  Once the results are recorded, the UD can be used to pull the material out of unrestricted stock and into blocked stock if it is still available in the plant.  Or even better, if batch managed you can restrict the batch which restricts it everywhere.  You than would have to recall the material to the your factory.  But you must be doing this now anyway since you say you typically ship before the results are completed.

Well, we certainly agree on "possible solutions without calling a programmer". Rejected, though, the client is very clear about their requirements; the only case in which we're going to have the double-inspection structure is one in which things may need to be shipped to the customer before a certain inspection is finished, but not for warehouse movements in what they view as a 20-km-long factory. Except for that case, stock has to be in Quarantine, period. It looks like it's going to be option B...

While making stock posting through QAC2 or QA11 or QA12 or QA32, stock posting will happen only at storage location level. Based on that goods movement, TR & even TO can be created automatically based on your configuration settings.

Thanks for the prompt answer, but our problem here is not the stock posting at the end of the inspection: it's moving things while still under inspection. That is, the inspection started while in the factory (Plant AAAA) but before it could be finished and due to a lack of space the material needs to be loaded onto a truck and brought to Plant WWWW, the warehouse. The material needs to be in Quality Inspection both in the factory and the warehouse. Releasing it, transporting it, and putting it back into Quality once it reaches the factory would involve duplicated inspection lots and other issues.

If the inspection wasn't linked to HU, we'd be able to transfer it from AAAA to WWWW without needing to release the material beforehand, but the transaction which does this (QAC2) is not prepared to work with HUs.
