As of HANA 1 SP 5, can an ECC system take full advantage of HANA, for example calculations done at the database level instead of the ABAP application layer? If so, I would assume that ECC code would have to be significantly modified to do so.

ABAP will be the same but code will be processed database layer.

You can utilize the HANA services fully scale if your ECC system is ECC 6 EHP6.
