Hi,
With Requirement Type KMFA in sale order, the system is graying out the item category field in VA01, so iam unable to change the item category, if i change the Requirement type then system is allowing me to edit the item category. pls help.

For the requirement type KMFA, a requirement class is assigned
On the configuration of requirement class, check if there is any Order type assigned in the field ORDER TYPE
if it is there then automatically it will grey out the item category, which will not allow you to change it further

Check the document flow of the sales order. If production order is created, then you can't change the item category. This is because item category + MRP type is assigned to find the requirement type in t.code OVZI and as above said, the requirement type -> requirement class has production order type assigned in it.
So you must first delete the production order, then the system may allow to change the item category in sales order.
