Add a new node to an existing cluster

Hi experts,

We have the current configuration, a cluster environment in which both  nodes are configured to support SAP and/or SQL

We are trying to add a third node to the cluster, that will be configured only to support SQL (SAP can only run on the
existing nodes, SQL can run on any node)

This new configuration would mean that in the event of a failure we can move the SQL recourse to the new node, leaving SAP to run on the existing node configured with SAP.

This would still produce the requirements in protecting the resourse from being over utilised on a single node.

Could you please confirm us if this configuration can be made?

As additional info: We have Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition x64 in our cluster nodes.

Is there any special configuration to include a third cluster node only in SQL Group of our SAP Cluster ERP?

Many thanks in advance,

Raul

Good Day

Unfortunately it is not supported.

Check this article and your answer is there

http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-25454

How many failover nodes are currently supported by MSCS/SAP?

The number of SAP cluster nodes is only limited by the maximum of cluster nodes supported by MSCS. For Windows Server 2003 the maximum is 8 cluster nodes which mean 7 failover nodes. When using the SAP Replication Server with a cluster configuration the number of nodes is currently limited by two nodes.

Thank you both for the quick response.

Having a look into Reagan's answer the point that i don't see crearly, if that this two node limitation does not allow to add a third node with SAP or if is not possible to add a third node even if it has not any SAP related software instaled on it.

Could you please clarify me this point?

Many thanks and regards,

Raul

Good Day Raul

Have a look at this Microsoft KB article

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/288778

The KB article clarifies how many nodes can be used on MS cluster based on the OS.

Even the SAP article I have given you before clearly states that MSCS can have 8 nodes but SAP is currently LIMITED to 2 nodes.

Have a Nice Day
