My question is : Could you explain the role of SUP in this image?

SUP can be used only ofr manage authentication and security?

The image has been captured from tammy blog's: http://scn.sap.com/community/mobile/businessobjects/blog/2012/09/21/what-is-new-in-businessobjects-m...

The graphic show the three basic options of connectivity.

Either directly (often with VPN), or via a reverse proxy server (which removes the need to enter an additional password, which is necessay via VPN), or via SUP (which also allows other apps to use this same connection channel, and which provides a customer app dev platform).
