Hello Experts,
I am trying to understand the difference between the generated column views "p1.p2/MyView" and "p1.p2/MyView/hier/MyView", where p1 is the package, p2 is the subpackage, MyView is the view in package "p1.p2".
Please could some one let me know the technical difference between the two, when are they created and their significance? I noticed that "p1.p2/MyView/hier/MyView" generated column view is not created if the MyView doesn't have any columns identified as key attributes..
Thank you!
Regards,
Hema
Hi Hema
All members of all dimensions must belong to a hierarchy. Even if you do not explicitly create hierarchies in your SAP HANA data model, the SAP HANA modeler implicitly generates default hierarchies for each dimension.
In the above screenshot I had not created any hierarchy but still it automatically created as seen in _SYS_BIC schema.
The hierarchies belonging to an attribute view are available in an analytic view that reuses the attribute view, in read-only mode. However, the hierarchies belonging to an attribute view are not available in a calculation view that reuses the attribute view.
MDX is implicitly a hierarchy-based paradigm. MDX uses a multidimensional data model to enable navigation in multiple dimensions, levels, and up and down a hierarchy. With MDX, you can access pre-computed aggregates at specified positions (levels or members) in a hierarchy.

Hello Raj,
Thanks for the detail. Please could you clarify the below?
1) What is the difference between hierarchies created for attribute view and analytic view?
2) If I explicitly include hierarchies in an attribute view, I noticed two column views - one for system generated hierarchy, and one for the hierarchy I created - is that correct?
Also, could you point to any good documentation/article to learn more about the modelling hierarchies in HANA?
Regards,
Hema
Hi Hema,
1) What is the difference between hierarchies created for attribute view and analytic view?
We create hierarchy between attributes in modeler to improve the analysis for business users after the report is created.
We can create hierarchy in Attribute view only but not in Analytic view or Calculation view.
We can use hierarchy created in Attribute view in Analytic view under logical join of data foundation.
We can use hierarchy created in Attribute view in Calculation view using CE_JOIN_VIEW or CE_OLAP_VIEW functions.
If you try to create hierarchy in Analytic view then create icon will not be enable to do so.
2) If I explicitly include hierarchies in an attribute view, I noticed two column views - one for system generated hierarchy, and one for the hierarchy I created - is that correct?
No. If you create hierarchy in attribute view then you can see the attribute name and also attribute name with hierarchy name in column views of _SYS_BIC as shown in below screen.
If we had not created hierarchy for the attribute view AT_HIER, then in column view you will see
The system will create the hierarchy as /hier/attribute_view_name.

Hello Raj,
Please find the below image where it shows two generated columns views, one for HANA generated hierarchy and one for the hierarchy I created.
However I could only see the hierarchy I created in the Analytical view and same is the case in excel when consuming the Analytical view.
Also, regarding my question no 1:- I meant system created hierarchies for Analytical views.. Please see the below image where system has created two column views for hierarchies - one for measures and the other for attribute fields. In my example, I have only one attribute field - unit of measure. I am assuming system would create one hierarchy for each attribute field included in the o/p columns of an analytical view...Is that correct?
Thank You!
Hema
Hi Hema,
You may want to refer to the thread http://scn.sap.com/thread/3366882, which also discusses a similar point. Lars has wonderfully explained different column views generated in the discussion.

Ravi
