BI 7.3 Upgrade Requirement

Former Member
0 Kudos

Hi All ,

I have the following system configured for Business Intelligence :-

Source

Windows 2003 32 bit

SAP BW 3.5

DB2 UDB 8.1 32 bit

Target

Windows 2008 R2

SAP 7.3

DB2 9.7 64 bit

Plan to upgrade :

1.Install Windows 2008

2.Install Plain BW3.5 .

3.Restore Production Copy

4.Upgrade Database 8.1 32 bit to 9.7 64 bit.

5.Upgrade BI to 7.3

My Question is it possible to Upgrade Database 8.1 32 bit to 9.7 64 bit directly  ?

Regards

Clement

Hi Clement,

Refer the upgrade guide http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/901b4314-9851-2c10-1c8f-b0ddd38d6...

Operating System-Related Restrictions

■ The upgrade to DB2 9.7 is not supported on any 32-bit operating system.

■ You cannot upgrade your database to DB2 9.7 on the following 64-bit operating system platforms

because they are no longer supported as of DB2 Version 9.5:

● HP-UX on PA-RISC

● Linux on IA64

● Windows on IA64

So you cannot directly upgrade from Database 8.1 32 bit to 9.7 64 bit .

Suggestion approach would be

1) Migrate existing system to 64-bit environment using system copy with R3load.

2) Then perform database upgrade to 9.7 on the new system

Hope this helps.

Hello Deepak, Clement,

I reckon the target version compatability with database version  8.1 32 can also contribute. It is better to check as well.

Many Thanks

Hi Deepak

Sorry  the target Operating System will be Windows x64 .

As per statement below in the guide , it did not mentioned anything about the bit , that is why I ask whether  our database is actually DB2 UDB 8.2 32 bit (not 8.1 as mentioned earlier ) can be upgraded directly to DB2 LUW 9.7 64 bit ?

A direct upgrade to DB2 9.7 is only supported if your database is at least DB2 UDB Version 8, FixPak 9. The upgrade from DB2 UDB Version 8, FixPak 8 or lower is

not supported.

Hi,

My suggestion is not to worry about a DB2 9.7 upgrade - rather perform a migration.

i.e.

you can perform the OS migration and DB migration in one step if you use System Copy (R3load)

From there you upgrade 3.5 to 7.3 (This is going to be the more difficult task)

I don't think there is a direct upgrade path.

You'll need to search the SDN for more help on the this ...

What also seems important is whether you have SEM/Finbasis installed - this may also prohibit you from doing a direct upgrade ...

Hi Deepak & Chris n all  ,

Thanks for the input .

This means the steps are as follow :-

Step 1 --> Install new windows 2008 operation system with 64bit

Step 2 --> Homogeneous system copy using R3load method for our BW 3.5 from

windows 2003 32bit to windows 2008 64bit. Convert DB2 database from 8.2 32 bit to 9.7 64 bit

Step 3 --> Upgrade BW3.5 to BW 7.3

This should be the approach , correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

Dear Clement,

My suggestion would be --->

1. Take a export of windows 2003 32bit BW 3.5 server.

2. Install new windows 2008 operation system with 64bit

3. Install DB2 database 9.7 version 64bit

4. Install BW 7.3 components using the system copy option and Installation export would be the one we have taken export of sorce system (windows 2003 32bit BW 3.5 server).

I guess this would get rid of the step upgrade of BW3.5 to BW NW 7.3.

Regarding step 4, it is not possible to upgrade using a system copy. You have to upgrade using the standard SAP upgrade tools.
