Hi,
We have a SAP ECC 6.0 landscape and will be integrated using a non-SAP middleware. We are planning to develop all our interfaces as web services based and need to use SAP ESR as modeling tool. I have found out that ESR can be installed standalone on NW Java stack. Also, we want to use standard enterprise services after doing some enhancement.
So, i need to find out whether it is possible to enhance standard enterprise in standalone ESR or do we need PI for enhancing the services?
Also, let me know if you have any inputs (pros/cons) on this architecture of having standalone ESR connected to SAP ECC Development for modeling purposes.
Thanks,
Vinod
Hi,
I would like to come back to the original question of Vinod: is it possible to install and run ESR without PI?

Hi Vinod,
you can use ESR on PI or composition environment for your purposes. PI makes sense if you want to use it as integration hub in runtime scenarios for development of integration scenarios (RFC<->WS) administration of scenarios, backend abstraction and so on.
In some cases (usage of ABAP service groups) you need a UDDI which is not part of ESR. There some scenarios where PI makes sense: asynchronous Web Service but here you could try to use the local integration Engine of AS ABAP.
BTW: In higher releases AS ASAP has MDR which can do the same as ESR. Working with ESR is easier and in a SOA scenario with external systems providing service definitions working with ESR makes more sense.

Tobias

Hi Tobias
Thanks for your inputs.
We don't have a requirement to use PI during runtime as we are using a non-SAP middleware. But need to use the modeling functionalities of ESR for defining the services using SOA standards.
So, need to know if standalone ESR can be used for enhancing the standard enterprise services or do we need PI for it?
If PI is required then do we need complete landscape or only a single system for development?
I have referred SDN guide at below link but it's not very clear if PI is required or not:
Thanks,
Vinod
