Hi

Virtual CPUs (vCPU) in VMware virtual machines appear to the operating system as single core CPUs. So, if you create a virtual machine with 8 vCPUs (which you can do with vSphere) the operating system sees 8 single core CPUs. If the operating system is Windows 2003 Standard Edition (limited to 4 CPUs) it only runs on 4 vCPUs.

Please refer to the following link and decide how may vCPU's you require for th SAPS you configured  using the quicksizer tool.

Mukunthan, this is not correct since vSphere 5.x

I'd really recommend to go to your hardware vendor with sizing related questions.

Your question cannot be answered in such a general way, it depends from too many factors such as SAP application, amount of users and underlying infrastructure (hardware/virtualization) used.

Ask your hardware partner for his support on sizing, also the quicksizer might help you: http://service.sap.com/quicksizer

For hardware supported with SAP, you could check for benchmarks and the number of SAPS they threw out.  They are available at http://www.sap.com/campaigns/benchmark/index.epx.
