Hello experts,
We need to change the config options on the delivered Standard Order Type "OR". Can we just change the config options on "OR"? Or do we need to make a copy of "OR" to "ZOR" and then make our config changes. What are the consequences of changing "OR". We have a SAP client that will remain as delivered config for reference. So is there any consequences to changing delivered config to an alternative standard configuration option.
This is a new project and we are trying to determine configuration policy.
Thanks,
Matt
Dear Matt,
It is always recommended to copy the existing SAP order type and create new one by prefixing either "Z" or "Y".
Please refer SAP hep on this:
Recommendation
For small changes, SAP recommends that you copy similar existing sales document types in the standard SAP R/3 System and make the appropriate changes. Small changes might, for example, be, a changed description, a different number range or a different increment for the numbering of items. The name is to start with the letter Z as SAP keeps this range free in the standard system. This procedure has the following advantages:

Matt,
Could you please explain -
We have a SAP client that will remain as delivered config for reference.
Why shouldn't we make changes in standard document types (e.g. OR)?
Arun has probably answered that question.
To make it clearer, please take below example:
In sales document type OR you have made some changes e.g.
Number range - from 02 to Z1
Reference mandatory - from blank to B
Delivery type - from LF to Z1LF
Billing type - from F2 to Z1F2
Billing block - from blank to ZB
Now, the business works with the above setup, creating transaction data.
And the settings are suited to the business requirement.
After an upgrade (version), OR shall again be set to its default settings.
Meaning
Number range would be again 02 (not Z1)
Billing block would again be blank (not ZB)
etc.
But if you create a ZOR (or YOR) the changes done in those documents shall not be touched when there is an upgrade.
Therefore SAP recommends to create your own documents by copying the standard documents.
And to not change the standard documents.

Hi Matt Menzies,
Why SAP best practice advise us to create new one with start of Y or Z?
it is because
if you use standard one OR and within this you want to modify somethings and after few years you client want to upgrade its version, that time system will not consider standard one which is name is not started from Y or Z for new version.

Arun

Hi Matt,
I think people have already answered you , but again to reiterate the point that standard settings should not be changed , it is always the universally followed practice to copy the standard ones and create a Z one or Y one with the necessary settings for the organisation.
That way you are not missing anything SAP has given you, but you also get what your enterprise is looking for.

dear, SAP recommends to not change the standard types.
please copy from OR to whatever you need (Z**) and make your changes.
good luck
