How to create a Characteristics for INCH

I would like to create an Characteristics for INCH.

We have now the problem, that we want to write it in the following way:

4/5 "

And then we want to calculate with this later.

Do you know if this is possible? I haven't found anything about this.

Do you have a predefined, limited list of values for this characteristic?

Or is it a free entry, and the user can input any value for it?

Depending on this, a solution can be elaborated either making use of a variant table, or by means of a function.

The only option i could think is to create this characteristic as character format.In this format you can write 4/5".
