You can use CentOS for a test system.

CentOS is binary compatible to the corresponding RedHat Enterprise Linux version, uses the RedHat package sources and just removes copyright protected stuff from the packages.

Just be aware that you won't get support from SAP if you have problems with the installation on CentOS.

Redhat and Suse Linux are supported, you can check the PAM for details.

Any other linux version -> you are on your own, but maybe you try one of the free forks of Redhad and Suse.

No the enterprise editions are not really free, you can download and install them, but you have to purchase a license to get updates and patches.

SAP does not support any of the free linux versions, nothing is free in the SAP world. But people are able to get SAP running on openSUSE, Fedora / CentOS (the free versions of SLES and RHEL).

So if you are just playing around, give it a try, but that can be a bumpy road. If you plan to use the stuff productively you will have to consider purchasing licenses anyway.

You are free to do whatever you want 😉

We are using suse for years now, and we are happy with it.
