Difference between a UNV and a UNW file

Hello,

What is the difference between a UNV and a UNW file?

We have an automated process for updating a universe and it is failing with a message that it failed to convert a UNV to a UNW file.  This is happening on a BO XI R2 SP4 system.  We have several of these systems in different deployments and have never seen this issue before.  From what we can tell this issue came up from one run to the next with no change being made to the universe.

We are hoping that by understanding what the difference is between the two files that perhaps we can figure out what has changed with our universe.

Thanks.

Hello,

There are two different file extensions for a Universe file, .unv and .unw. What is the difference?

If we are working on a Universe named 'Order', the file name when working in Design is 'order.unv'. The unv extension is the Design extension used "locally".
As soon as you export the Universe to the Repository the file extension changes to .unw. The file is then saved in a directory named after the object id (e.g. '855263') which is placed under the Input File Repository Server (FRS) directory.
If you open CMC and look at the properties for that Universe the path could be something like
'frs://Input/a_123/012/013/855263/order.unw'.

Proposed Solution:

Basically, you need to find the universe in the FRS and then replace the UNV with your local copy. Once you do this, you can import and export right away. It will clean up everything.

Regards,

Hi Krisian,

.unv files are actual physical files for universe where as .unw are temporary session cache file specific to he user who uses the universe. .unw files will be deleted automatically once the session is closed.
