SAP BW7.3 With HANA

Dear Experts,

Please guide me for the below concerns,

Pro cons of migrating traditional Cubes into HANA Compliant cubes, is it mandatory to migrate?

  • If we do not convert  to SAP HANA Cubes are there any  implications on facilities and features?  Specially from the HANA/reporting perspective. The performance of reports running on traditional cubes will be as good as HANA compliant cubes?
  • Is there any improvement in data loading if we use HANA compliant cube vs traditional cube?
  • Is there any implications/Prerequisite , if we use standard  Extractors on HANA DB.

Best Regards,

Kavitha.

Hello Kavitha,

Please find my comments.--

SAP HANA optimized cubes do not have "Dimension Tables" (barring the Package Dimension) wherein the Facts are mapped directly to the SID Tables. Therefore

  • Load to the Infocubes is faster because there is no need for the system to generate DIM ids.
  • Theoritically, the Reads from these cubes are faster as well because it need not traverse through one additional join (the join between DIM and SIDs)

1) So there will surely be difference in the performance between HANA Optimized Infocube and a   Classic Infocube. The bigger the data, the more you see differences in performance

2) There are some features that are strictly available for HANA Optimized InfoCubes only.Eg: Planning Applications Kit (PAK) requires that the underlying planning cube is HANA Optimized.

3) You can continue to use the standard extractors with HANA DB as well. However, keep track of the new features that may/will be delivered in this area to decide which way to load data to BW.
