Operational mode in SAP BW 7.3

Hi Experts ,

Can you tell us why we maintain Operational modes ( Night / Day) in SAP BW systems.

What are the recommendations / limitations provided by SAP for this.Operational mode .

Is this Operational mode is good to implement in BW systems ?

Is this operational mode only applies to BW system or to any SAP system ??

Is it good to implement the operational mode rather than increase the WP in bw system ??

It would be great help, if you can provided the sap notes / recommendations for reference

Thanks & Regards,

Suri

Hi Suri,

Operational Modes are maintained for automatic switching of profile parameters wrt to availability of SAP work processes.

For eg: In ERP systems during business peak hours mostly dialog work processes will be occupied and during low peak time or night time users schedule background jobs and hence mostly background work processes are occupied. In order to facilitate availability of more dialog work processes during peak hours and more background processes in night time operational modes are defined.

For BI mostly background work processes are being used. Based on your business hours you may evaluate work processes requirement. If not much dialog work processes are required during business hours you may go without operational modes. You may fix the number of dialog and background work processes spanning entire day.

For more details on Operational Modes refer SAP link

Hope this helps.

Hi Deepak,

Thanks for the immediate response. I have gone thr the link but we have a different opinion from our Basis team like they are giving preference to increase in WP's rather than applying the operational mode....for me Operational mode is a good idea

Do you have any idea that how many dialogue WP's can be allocated in a night mode when the system is having 16 Dia WP's and 10 BGD WP's in normal operational mode.

Do we have any recommendations from SAP on this allocation logic ?

Can you please suggest

Thanks in advance,

Suri

Hello Suri,

Please perform the adjustment as per following to start with for Night operation.

Diag -13

BGD-13

This is based on experience.

You can also use ST03 transaction and try to find a pattern for day and night and modify accordingly.

Kind Regards,

Jacob

Hi Suri,

Do you have any idea that how many dialogue WP's can be allocated in a night mode when the system is having 16 Dia WP's and 10 BGD WP's in normal operational mode.

For SAP BI system a minimum of 6 background processes are sufficient. The current configuration

16 DIA and 10 BGD looks ok without operational mode as 10 BGD processes should be enough to manage process chains in BI system. Do you see that there are not much usage of DIA processes , you may ask the basis team to change the work processes as

12 DIA and 14 BGD.

I am not suggesting operation mode for BI because process chains runs for a longer time and incase operational mode switches and number of BGD processes gets reduced, few of the jobs may get delayed resulting in delayed reporting.

In case its and ECC System, then I would suggest you to go with Operation mode

Day time: 20 DIA and 6 BGD

Night time: 13 DIA and 13 BGD

PS: There is no standard recommendation from SAP as it depends on how many jobs you run withing the system.

Hope this helps.
