There is no limitation on using APO - DP and it offers superior functionality compared to ECC. It can even considers causal factors and allow you to use regression models to generate forecast based on macro economical factors. Multiple products or product groups are not mandatory and DP can be used to generate statistical forecast even for one product. The main influencing factors are your characteristics and availability of historical values.
If you intend to use APO SNP and PP/DS, forecast is required for typical make-to-stock production. It'll be supplied from DP or ECC (Planned independent requirements) or 3rd party tool through InfoCube.
If your company already uses a best-of-breed tool to generate forecast with superior accuracy level, then it does not make sense to implement DP as you can feed the forecast data using BI.
