good short documentation related to system copy of an ECC system based on windows/sql 2008 r2

Former Member

Hello

Does anyone has a  good short documentation related to system copy of an ECC system based  on windows/sql 2008 r2?

I used to achieve copy several years ago using sapnotes

151603 and 551915(anything dramatically changed?)

Thank you in advance

Jan

Hello,

You should go through the guides located at http://service.sap.com/instguides.

You then select your product / release : here for example SAP ERP -> ERP 6.0 -> installation.

In this part you should find a link to system copy guides like : Copying Systems Based on NW 7.0/7.0 EHPs-SW Prov. Mgr. 1.0

.

You download the appropriate document and that's it.

Regards,

Steve.

Dear Steve, dear Samuli
I know that, however I have already QAS installed (would like just to refresh it with data from PRD).
So I did several years ago (on an other installation which for sure was win/sql but not sql2008 r2)
I know I detached PRD and copied across e.g:
copy d:\PRDDATA1\PRDDATA1.mdf g:\QASDATA1\QASDATA1.mdf
then I know I had to run a script as attaching was not possible (this is actually I am looking for).
After that attaching was possible and starting of the system also
thx in advance

Hi Jan,

Please check whether the below note helps.

Note 683447 - SAP Tools for MS SQL Server

Thanks and Regards,

I believe you are referring the below scripts available in the below notes.

Note 151603 - Copying an SQL Server database

Note 193816 - Restore with SQL Server

O.K.

So the procedure is still rather the same.

You can perform the detach / attach procedure. The difference is that now the STM tool is not used anymore. It is integrated in the new SAPINST CDs.

Steve.

Dear all

indeed it is pritty confusing. The homogeneous copy guide recommends note 151603 for detach/attach procedure.

This note then invoke SAP Tools for MS SQL Server described in note 683447.

The funniest then note 683447 tells not to use  SAP Tools for MS SQL Server (for system with kernel version 7.0 and higher) but use sapinst instead(and initially sapinst/copy guide sent me here)??

(I have target instance already installed/i.e I am just refreshing QAS)

So  I intend in 683447 follow the path in which SAP Tools for MS SQL Server described in note 683447 cannot be used and go to scripts in note 1294762.

If I understand Schema4SAP.vbs should be transfered to server and run there (I do not understand why the two SQL scripts in the Schema4SAP.zip).

Now here I have a question as I will have access to server on tuesday and can not prepare myself upfront.

Schema4SAP.vbs (when I run it on my laptop) is checking for instance on an hostname. Will the VB-script ask me something more and what I can expect?

I guess I should get an sql script (somewhere) content of which I should paste in SQL server management studio?

Sorry but these notes makes me very confused (I  am sure next time everything will be very clear to me)

Thank you in advance

I guess I need to add info that on same host where QAS resides also DEV system is living. The owner( sytem->status) is <sid> so on PRD as on QAS

Just restore the PRD database on QAS and perform the System Copy -> Target System with the Installation Master (SAPINST) suitable for your release. If you are running a very recent release, you can also use SPM. You should not use STM nor standalone scripts.

Thank you Samuli

So I am doing. I attached successully PRD as QAS database

I downloaded Software Provision Manager Sp01 and started sapinst. Now I downloaded Kernel DVD for SPM

I hope it is correct approach (it seems I am stucked in Getting information about QAS schemata )

Is this correct?

Thank you in advance

I myself would use the Installation Master for your SAP release, it's straight forward. That is assuming the Installation Master supports your OS/DB. What is your SAP release?  At least some SWPM features work only for NW7.3 and higher. If you use the NW70 specific SWPM, you should also be able to use the System Copy feature. See SAP note 1680045 for details.

I went over(the Getting info about QAS schemata)

now I guess I am asked about SL controller 720(second querry for Kernel DVD) and I got querry " found label .. but need the label SAP:SAPLUP700.*.*.*

thank you for opignion

Jan

It is requesting the SL Controller DVD, locate the media 51045213_8. Can you share your exact SAP release so that people can give correct advice to you?

Thank you, Samuli

I am on 7.0 (i-e 7.01) as per sapnote 1680045 I used SWPM. I hope for the best in this phase.

Especially as I was not asked for system nr (chosed "typical" opion) and I have two systems on same host.

However I was asked for instance profile so I hope procedure gets info there (should have some security  not to delete other system)

Kindest regards

Seems I am on good track:)

"Moving object from PRD to QAS, remaining objects:59789"

It is beeing 6 jears since my last copy win/mssql (usualy I am dealing with oracle/HP-UX r3load method)

Looks like you don't have enough memory to start the instance. In case you have SQL Server on the same server as the SAP instance, limit the memory used by the SAP instance by specifying PHYS_MEMSIZE. I myself usually set 50-50%, another approach is 70-30%. Set also SQL Server to a fixed value.

Hi Samuli

You were right. I stopped an old system on this machine..

I am able to start system via mmc now. However somehow SPM got frozen ("analyzing logs .. "for eternity)

I also stopped the system back so leaving SPM to do that job (but SPM "analyzing logs .. "for eternity")

I stopped then the SPM (wanted to restart with option "old.."). While starting SPM is now "frozen" in "Starting handshake"

I wander what to do now. What would you recommend?

(no much left for SPM as far as I remember only ABAP reports / these are maybe not necessary in copy scenario)

kindest regards

Jan

Sometimes filesystem based tasks can take a very long time on Windows without you seeing any noticeable activity. You should close SPM and then kill the respective Java processes so that all locks, etc. are released. Then restart and complete SPM. If you are unable to figure it out, rebooting the server is another option.

Hello jan,

SAP provides official system copy documentation. In your scenario, you should go to http://service.sap.com/instguides and choose SAP Business Suite Applications, SAP ERP, SAP ERP 6.0, Installation, Copying Systems Based on NW 7.0/7.0 EHPs. In addition you should read to all related SAP notes.

Best Regards,

Valerio

What SAP release are you on? You should follow the System Copy guide for your SAP release, no need for notes unless there are program errors, pre-requisites, etc. For homogeneous System Copy of a Windows/SQL Server system in recent SAP releases SAPINST (the Installation Master DVD) is all you need.
