As Sadhu Mentiones Product Selection uses the material determination functionality to propose / substitute products in sales order based on various requirements as created.

Material determination:

Is baiscally a functionality used to replace a particular Material with a Substitute/alternate matrerial during the validity period.

Ex: You want to promote a certain Slowly moving product instead of Fast moving product for cetain period. This can be done with Substitute reason.

An additional consideration - you can set up material determination to cover a range of products for selection - for example if you sell laptops, you could enter the word "LAPTOP" in your material determination master data and set a number of materials to be 'substituted to'. The control of this list is set according to the material determination reason code.

In the above example, if a user entered the word "LAPTOP" in the orders screen material field when placing an order, they would be prompted with a list of materials and can select the one they want.

Material determination:

provides with a tool for automatically exchanging materials in the sales document

When processing a document, the system automatically searches for valid master records that created previously in material determination

We can assign a substitution reason to every master record in material determination that defines how the material should be determined

Hi,

Product selection uses material determination functions to automatically propose a variety of substitute products based on your requirements, customer requirements, and product availability.

Material determination enables the automatic substitution of materials in sales documents during sales order processing. For example, during the course of a sales promotion, the system can, during sales order entry, automatically substitute a material that has promotional packaging. A consumer product may have a special wrapper for, for example, the Christmas season. Using material determination, the system substitutes the material only during the specified period.
