A key requirement for efficient and safe support of IT solutions is the ability to perform root cause analysis with speed and efficiency. Solution Manager Diagnostics leverages the ABAP supportability principles to the Java world. It is mandatory to install one Solution Manager Diagnostics within the solution landscape if a customer runs applications based on SAP Web AS JAVA. Active Global Support performs root cause analysis on incoming incidents on Solution Manager Diagnostics.

Why is it mandatatory ? for the support contract with sap ?
We can use an other tool that solution manager for the sap monitoring trhu plug-in like BMC PATROL or HP OpenView. Also the for help desk, we used remedy instead of SAP SM.

Hi Azzédine,
SAP Solution Manager is mandatory for getting support any application running on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s) and for SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s) standalone deployments as of last month. It is required to get patches, support connections and for entering customer messages. There is a lot of information on this on SDN and on the SAP Solution Manager home page (http://service.sap.com/solutionmanager).
You do not have to use SAP Solution Manager for all your monitoring, but you can if you wish. As SAP Solution Manager runs on SAP NetWeaver, you have all the integration with 3rd party monitoring tools available for SAP Solution Manager too.
Cheers,
Mike
