Solaris Sparc to x86 for Intel - is a migration?

Hello everyone,

We would like to switch our existing servers from Solaris Sparc to Solaris x86 for intel. We have Oracle 11 running and SAP ERP 6 Systems (some with EHP5, EHP6 and a few with ERP6).

Is this an OS Migration from SAP point of view?

Best Regards

Arun

Hi Arun,

This is a Heterogenous migration from x_64 to Intel architecture. For this you may need to follow the steps required for heterogenous system copy.

Reason being: x_64 has different codepage ( big endian) while Intel Architecture has different codepage (little endian).

Hope this helps.

This is incorrect, even though this migration require a full export/import is considered a homogeneous system copy as nor the OS or the DB change. Only the Hardware arquitecture is changing.

Here a previous discussion about it.

Hi Juan,

There is a contradictory response in another thread which says it is hetergenous system copy.

Hi Juan,

There is one more thread from Markus Doehr where he mentions its hetergenous system copy.

http://scn.sap.com/thread/1021252

Hope this clears the confusion.

Because of the change in Architecture the migration need to be done using R3load method (impor/export),  Same procedure as a Heterogeneous system copy, but because theres no change in OS/DB the copy is considered a Homogeneous System Copy.

Hi Juan,

Since there is a change in codepage it is treated as Heterogenous migration and not homogenous migration.

Even you have mentioned it as heterogenous in the thread https://scn.sap.com/thread/3143678

Yes, I believed it was that way, but change in endianness (and so code page) does not make a migration heterogenous. This particular scenario is discussed during the OS/DB migration certification course.

Thanks to both of you for all the info!

I found this blog http://blog.ranadive.net/2012/12/homogeneous-systemcopy-or-heterogeneous.html

And this answer my question

Have a nice day!

If you are asking this from the point of view of knowing if you need a migration certified consultant to perform it, then the answer is no, you don't.

We have just gone through this very migration ourselves, and carried out the process entirely with in-house, non-certified, staff, with SAP's blessing.
