Enabling compression on Oracle 11g

Hi Gurus,

For enabling compression(Table,row,page,index etc.) on Oracle 11g for SAP.. Do customers need to buy separate license or it is covered with the default SAP license itself?

I had the same question... please check SAP Note 740897: Info about the Oracle license scope; Required Oracle options

"If you have bought your Oracle database license through SAP, you have all of the required options. The SAP license package always includes all of the options that are required for the SAP environment."

Hi Jagadish,

you need to differ between index key and table (for OLTP) compression.

Index key compression is included in the Enterprise Edition, but you need an additional enterprise option called "ACO" (Oracle advanced compression option), if you want to use "OLTP" table compression.

ACO is included, if you purchased your Oracle license from SAP (for details check SAPnote #740897). ACO needs to be licensed separately, if you purchased your Oracle license from Oracle directly.

And just to cover this:

If you like to compress your backups with rman, compressing

with the standard method is included in the Enterprise Edition as well,

but using compression type "medium" (which is requiring A LOT less cpu resources)

also requires the advanced compression option.
