Swap for 64GB RAM on RedHat 6

Dear all,

I'll migrate the SAP system ECC6.0 from HP-UX 11.31 Oracle 11g into Linux RedHat 6.

I have many questions but now first about the swap definitions.

On the note Note 1597355 - Swap-space recommendation for Linux for system with more than 32GB RAM , swap-space is 64 GB.

Can you please tell me which is the "right" swap amount for 64GB RAM?

Thank you in advance.

BR,

Ruzica

Hi Ruzica,

To be honest; I think the amounts of swap space mentioned in that note are ridiculous. You should basically try to avoid using swap space at all times. If your SAP instance start paging out, the performance of the system will decrease dramatically.

I usually never configure more than 20GB of swap space, nevertheless the size of the physical memory. In case your SAP system requires all the time a large portion of this swap space, than either the system is wrongly configured or more physical memory needs to be added to the system.

If you would stick to the note, you require 96GB of swap space.

Kind regards,

Mark
