Hi Expert
We have SAP System with following System config
Windows 32 bit
MS SQL 2000
SAP 4.7 Enterprise edition
Support pack level : 51 [SAP BASIS [620 => 0051 => SAPKB62051]
Kernel patch level : 58
[Observed that SAP portal kernel patch level 414 exists]
We donot have any plan to upgrade Support package. But we are considering to upgrade kernel to improve performance.
1.Can you advidse wether upgrade of kernel will improve the performance of SAP?
2. please let me know if any SAP notes to confirm for performance improment from [ Kernel patch level : 58 ] to next level?
3.Without upgrading Support package, is it possible to upgrade only kernel patch level?. .
Thanks
Thiru.
Hi Thiru,
1.Can you advidse wether upgrade of kernel will improve the performance of SAP?
=> Kernel upgrades are meant to fix bugs in lower versions. So it there are performance related bugs in lower version, it could get fixed in higher versions of kernel.
2. please let me know if any SAP notes to confirm for performance improment from [ Kernel patch level : 58 ] to next level?
=> You may refer info file associated with each kernel patch on http://service.sap.com/patches.
It shall list down bugs fixed with that patch.
3.Without upgrading Support package, is it possible to upgrade only kernel patch level?.
=> Both Support package upgrade and Kernel patch upgrade are independent activities. But as a recommended practise we need to upgrade kernel patch before applying support packages. But it is not mandatory to perform kernel patch upgrade before support package upgrade.
Hope above information is useful.

Hi Deepak Kori.
Thank you for your response.
Regarding Questions3.
We will planning upgrade only kernel patch level from 620[51 ] to 640[404]
At present
Kernel patch level : 58
Suport packge : [SAP BASIS [620 =>=> SAPKB62051] => Released by SAP on 04.05.2005
Target
Kernel patch level : 404 [ Released on 15.06.2012]
In this case, after Kernel patch level[404] upgrade, will there be any issue/impact because of old existing support package [51] ?.
Thanks
Thiru.
