SWPM complains with 720EXT Kernel DVD but 720EXT is mandatory for Solaris 11

Hello,

I am trying to install a SolMan 7.1 on Solaris 11.

As documented in SAP Note 1669684, the only supported Kernel for Solaris 11 is EXT Kernel.

Therefore I provided Solaris 720EXT Kernel DVD.

The installer complains with the following error:

You entered: /xxx/D51045219

Found the label SAP:AKK:720_EXT:DVD_KERNEL:SAP Kernel 720_EXT:Dxxxxxxxx:*:D51045219

but need the label SAP:AKK:72:UKERNEL:*:SOLARIS_SPARC:*

How do you proceed when you face this problem?

Thanks in advance for your answer,

What are you using to install Solman... Sapinst or SWPM?

I am installing SolMan 7.1 with the sapinst command provided by SWPM.

Is it clear my friend 🙂

Well you could provide the 720 kernel and then overwrite it with 720_EXT once decompression is complete. It might easily be a bug with SWPM.

I had done this.

It works, but it is quite ugly.

The difference between you and me is that I did not dare telling it 🙂

If I perform so, I have to expect that SAP would start.

From the doc sick should report an error.

What would you do if you were on my place?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

It's not uncommon to find this issues. Its not as ugly as it sound either, when you assign a kernel in sapinst, it checks that the LABEL is correct and after decompressing the kernel it never goes near it again, so its not an issue. Sometimes Its even recommended specially when the Kernel in the DVD is outdated.

If I perform so, I have to expect that SAP would start.

I can't see a reason why not.. the difference between 720 and 720_EXT is the compiler so as long as the system has the right kernel before startup you shouldn't find any problems.

You mean transaction SICK?... No, it should be clean.

I would proceed with the install. No rules have been broken. Solaris 11 need kernel 720_EXT and that what you are providing

Yes I mean Transaction sick.

SAP Note 1669684 specifies that:

  • Installation with ABAP Stack

For a system with ABAP stack the installation can be done with the originally provided Kernel DVD.

    • Symptom: Shortdump: Transaction SICK failed

Solution: This shortdump can be ignored during installation Replace the  Kernel with an actual 720_EXT Kernel or 640_EX2 after installation.

---

As it is not possible to perform so with SAP provided DVDs, I should run Plan B 🙂

How do you know that the only difference between these kernels are the compilers?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

I cannot see a problem happening to be honest, if you do get an error in SICK then you should be able to simply ignore it.

The note says that the compiler is different AND the OS used for the compilation.

Anyway I may be able to tell you, if I succeed to instal 😞

When the OS or the compiler which are used during the builds run out of vendor support customers could run into a support problem. SAP therfore needs to provide a newer kernel which is built with the newer / supported version of the OS and compiler

Basically means that kernel EXT is been provided so you can run kernel 720 on newer OS/Compilers.

You need to download unicode version of kernel: 51045219_3.

Hello Roman,

How have you find out this missing DVD?

Is there a way to tell sapinst that this kernel is suitable for my install?

Sometimes, I am wondering if the box sent by SAP is for the hidden camera.

I have received 38 DVD.

Then I notice that there is no DVD suitable to start the installation.

Then I notice that there is no suitable Kernel DVD out of 20 Kernel DVDs shipped.

Thanks in advance for your answer.
