Dear Ish

Please provide more information when posting questions to the SCN forum as it will increase your chance on getting a proper answer back.

The quality of the answers you are getting reflect the quality of your question. No offence to anyone here who is trying to help out.

Maintenance optimizer is a scenario in SAP Solution Manager which is used to calculate the target support package stack version. So yes, this is the recommended method to calculate a XML file which can then be used to update your managed SAP system.

A slightly older YouTube video shows the maintenance optimizer:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHZq6t1w9CE

Is that the only supported way? No

You can also get a XML file by using https://service.sap.com/sp-stacks and choosing your source stack and target stack of a specific product and then having a background process calculate the needed packages for you

It's not the recommended method but you could use this if for example your Solution Manager is the first installation you do and you don't have Maintenance Optimizer configured yet /  you want to patch Solution Manager first. Basically it's not a good idea to use sp-stacks for the XML configuration unless you have a vanilla system meaning you installed using DVD's and it's version 6 for example and you wish to update to version 8 which is available straight away and you don't have a Solution Manager at your disposal.

There is a "generate XML stack" button after going through a couple of screens (where you should choose which components to take along, kernel wise etc).

Bottom line is: for a non-vanilla system definitely use the Maintenance Optimizer

For a vanilla system you could use sp-stacks but you have to really know what you are doing in order to make sure you have the right packages

Best regards

Tom

Hello,

What Solution Manager version and SP level are you on? Have you recently upgraded or updated the Solution Manager system?

What product version is the system you want to upgrade?

What part of the basic configuration have you performed?

First of all is

This guide tells you how to do the needed basic configuration.

Best regards,

Hello Ish

Logical steps are:

Basic configuration of your Solution Manager (solman_setup)

     - configuration of a SLD for example

     - synchronization from SLD to LMDB

Your managed SAP system would need to register to the SLD (rz70 in your managed SAP system or data supplier if as java based), then through synchronization of SLD content to LMDB, the managed SAP system would be created in Solution Manager as a technical system.

For that technical system you should run through the managed system setup wizard (solman_setup)

Once that is done, you should create a product system for that technical system using LMDB.

Once that is done, you should be able to use the managed SAP system in the maintenance optimizer.

There is a significant amount of technical prerequisites / actions to perform in the above.

Best regards

Tom
