Kernel upgrade during system copy

Former Member

Dear all,

I just want to clarify one doubt from you.

We are using kernel 7.00 and in our systems and planning to go for homogeneous system copy from production system. I know the manual procedure for upgradation from 7.00 to 7.20 kernel as per note 1636252.

My doubt is can i include 7.20 kernel archives/executables during installation of new system before start of homogeneous copy import?

(Because as per sap note 1633731, we have to exchange 7.20 EXT kernel manually as part of post installation process of system copy.)

Request you please clarify if any note tells that 7.00 to 7.20 kernel upgradation can be done during system copy.

Rgds,

Durga.

Hi Durga,

As per Syed suggestion, you can do it...

Or we can perform in an another way.

1. You can go ahead as per the SAPINST & default kernel package for your system.

2. SAPINST will uncar and update the exes folder with the original kernel files before the start of the import.

3. Before the start of import, you can terminate the import by renaming the R3load.exe file available inside your exe folder.

4.Download the latest 720 kernel and uncar and put it in the exe folders.

5. you will have the latest 720 R3load in your exe.

6.Try to continue the sapinst for the import..

i feel like it is pretty easier way for your query...

Please check and provide your feedback.

Thanks and Regards,

Hi Vimal,

Thanks for the information and I am not getting clear with note : 1480785. Also we are on AIX5.3 and moving towards on AIX7.1 OS. Other details are ERP6.0 & 11g (10.2.0.4 to 11g client), no EHPs.

Are there any standard procedure as per our scenario. please suggest.

Hi Durga,

   Your issue is pretty simple.

Please perform the actions as per suggestion above.

We dont need to make things very complicate.. Just perform as per the suggestions above.

It will work.. I have done like these many number of times.

Advantage  of using system copy for your scenario.

  1. You can upgrade your OS .
  2. You can install latest oracle version & import the Data .
  3. your DB will be re-organized (Size of your target system after import will be much less than the Size of your source system before export)

Please check and provide your feedback.

Thanks and regards,

Vimal

Hi Durga,

Since you are performing following system copy:

Source: AIX 5.3 / Oracle 10g / 700 Kernel

Target: AIX 7.0/ Oracle 11g / 720 Kernel

You may follow the steps below

1) Take export of source database using SAPINST

2) Install Target system using SAPINST option -> system copy using R3load option. Install database as Oracle 11g . Apply latest bundle patches for SAP.

3) Upgrade the kernel to 720_EXT

4) Import the database into target system.

5) Perform Post migration activities.

6) Make Target system up and running on AIX 7.0/ Oracle 11g / 720_Ext Kernel.

Above steps are smooth to execute since using sapinst.

Hi Vimal,

Thank you very much for the update.

As i mentioned earlier, we are shifting to new hardware with AIX 7.1.

kernel upgradation from 7.00 to 7.20, i want to do in later stage b'cos i have done and tested kernel upgradation in one of my system.

On top of AIX 7.1 new hardware, is it possible to import(system copy export) target system with existing setup in source system like 7.00 kernel and existing DB(11.2.0.2) & DB client (10.2.0.4) & SAP versions(ERP 6.0)?

Please suggest any reference documernt.

Yes Durga..

It is possible.

The dump that you have exported is independent of OS & DB.Means you can import it in any OS and DB regardless of the source system.

Just take a export from the source system and import it in your target system. As simple as it is.

Hello,

You can follow the SAP Note 1480785.

Note 1480785 - Creating a Modified Windows Kernel DVD

Hope it helps.
