First you need to check compatibility between:

1) your SAP kernel and new OS level; you may need to upgrade your SAP kernel (http://service.sap.com/pam or check relevant SAP notes)

2) your DBMS and new OS level; you may need to upgrade your DBMS

(http://service.sap.com/pam or check relevant SAP notes)

After OS upgrade adjust OS level parameters according to SAP recommendations (see relevant SAP note). If you use oracle you may need to relink software.

All these recommendations assume that during OS upgrade you don't damage your SAP system or successfully restore it after (with any method, for example system copy).

Dear Roman,

1)  While doing OS patching, there is no impact on SAP kernel. If we go for SAP kernel upgrade, then we need to check compatibility. So SAP kernel upgrade isn't a case here, only OS patching & kernel upgrade

2) yes, We are planning for DB upgrade. That's is ok.....

3) Where do we find OS level parameters. WE have SUSE linux11. Please suggest relevant SAP note....

4) Seeking your further advice regarding the same....

Answer : There won't be any impact. We have recently patches our windows environment and SAP & DB  is working fine.

You will need to have your SAP & DB services down during the OS patching.

Since you are just Patching , there won't be any OS parameter change for SAP .

You can go ahead.

Please have a complete offline backup before you start your activity.

Thanks and Regards,

Share the exact version of the source and target OS and also the source and target SAP kernel.

Are you only upgrading (patching) your existing OS and exchanging the SAP kernel while you are at it? If so, see SAP notes regarding known issues when replacing the SAP kernel and also OS specific notes.

Without knowing the details, I would say that exchanging the SAP kernel has more affect on applications then patching of the OS.

Dear Samuli,

This is only OS patching & kernel upgrade. No activity will be done on SAP like SAP kernel upgrade etc.

VERSION = 11

PATCHLEVEL = 0

Target->

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64)

It should be safe to upgrade SLES 11 to SLES 11 SP2. Since SP2 is based on the Linux 3.x kernel the most important SAP note for you is 1629558. Make sure that you don't need a SAP kernel upgrade. The SLES11 SAP note 1310037 is currently being worked on, it might contain some SP2 specific information, better check with SAP support. Also check Novell's SUSE web site for the SP2 release notes.
