Database Migration (Oracle -> MS SQL ) on an live SAP IdM system

Hi Experts,

I'm facing an interesting question regarding a custumer who wants to switch its DB editor from Oracle to MS SQL server 2012.

Actually running on IDM 7.1 / Oracle 10  and looking for an IdM upgrade to 7.2 and MS SQL server, yes both upgrades in the same time !

Obviously what would be impacted :

• Connexion drivers (Oracle JDBC -> SQL JDBC)

• for the MMC

• and the VDS configuration

the Runtime engin (uninstall / install)

The non standard configuration

• SQL statements inside the tasks and jobs

SQL statements inside the scripts

Stored Procedures

What's not impacted (but feel free to correct )

• IDM schema will remain the same (between MS SQL and Oracle)

• Standard configuration ? (but still fuguring out where to activate standard configuration for MS SQL if you have already performed an initial installation?)

• Functional data in the Database (Identities, privileges, BR ...)

• Temporary tables will be created automatically at a new execusion of jobs (if configured as so)

As this editor migration came up in the same time as the IDM migration to 7.2 project, I'm working on a detailed migration plan, with 2 options :

Option 1 :

1.First changing the IDM schema from Oracle to SQL Server

- Creating another connector to MS SQL

- Adapting syntax for MS SQL

- Tests and securing the editor switch

2. Ten performing IDM migration to 7.2 with the standard SAP migration tools

Option 2 :

- Forget about IDM migration tools and starting from scratch with a brand new system straight with IDM 7.2, MS SQL sevrer 2012

- A manual copy past from 7.1 to 7.2, creating tasks and adapting them to IDM 7.2

>> In this project we don't mind about keeping the productif history data

So the big questions are  :

What would you recomand as a best (secure) strategy to go with both of those migrations? knowing that they are both related to the DB...

Witch one of the options is a less risky ? or welcome to suggest any others ?

SAP has no recons on this subject , so feel free to brainstorm with me or to add things to the what's impacted / what's not / how to do it  section

Best Regards,

Fadoua

Just adding a few thoughts:

For option #1 you should contact the PM (Kåre Indrøy) and ask about Oracle to SQL Server db migration, he should be able to help you out with some information. There's tools in development to help migrate users & configuration, mainly to DB2, but I recommend you ask him about Oracle to SQL Server migration. You probably have to migrate to 7.2 on Oracle first though...

If you dont mind about loosing the current production data & history and a fresh initial load is OK, then you should take a good look into option #2. That would allow you to start of with the 7.2 Provisioning Framework and adding your customizations to it with a blank slate. Perhaps you have some processes that can be improved using the new functionality in 7.2 rather than just porting the existing ones designed for 7.1. Perhaps some are not required anymore or can be supported oob with the new features.

Best regards,

Chris
