I would also recommend checking out the MDM <i>IT Scenario Configuration Guide</i>. The blog series only illustrates one particular method of integrating with MDM and XI, but as you will see there are many different ways it can be done. For example:

MDM -> XI -> R/3 -> XI -> MDM, or

XI -> (BPM) -> R/3 and MDM, or

MDM -> XI -> R/3 -> ABAP API, etc.

I am not able to access this link.
