What is SAP Best Practice to upgrade physical hypervisor infrastructure?

Platform:  WINDOWS 2008 R2 SP1 64x on VMWare 5

Architecture:  12 SAP VM Servers for ECC with 1 Message server. 13 servers total

Note:  Each app server contains 4 cores 32 GB of RAM.  Our message server contains 4 cores with 8GB RAM

Hi SAP Experts,

We have a virtualized SAP Environment.  We are looking to upgrade our physical hypervisor infrastructure and we are gearing this upgrade toward better performance for SAP.

Is there a particular Intel Zeon processor line that performs better for SAP processing.  These servers will most likely be on an HP Proliant platform running VMWare ESXi 5.1 and some of our VM Servers utilize a single processor.  One of the challenges we experience with our current infrastructure

is single processor VM's utilizing 100% of physical CPU resources.

Our goal is to improve not only the overall processing, but to also improve the per CPU Processing performance as well.  We understand that higher cores with faster clock speed will out perform less Cores than slower clock speed and same per CACHE, but we are using cost as a factor in this build.

Thank you,

Teresa Wilson

This does not indicate that you have performance problems. It's just indicate that processor is fully utilized. First try to check if it is vCPU-bound performance issue or overall VM performance issue (all vCPUs are fully utilized) or overall physical server performance issue. Also please investigate how this utilization is divided between user%, system%, iowait%. After that you get the general direction in which to move forward.
