Just wanted to let you know that both Unicode and Non Unicode ABAP 6.40 kernel are available for Oracle based systems. Kernel can be used to add additional ABAP application servers on Solaris x64 servers. Enqueue Message Server and database are not supported to run on Solaris x64. Installation media are available on
Download -> Entry by Application Group ->Installations and Upgrades ->
SAP NetWeaver-> SAP NETWEAVER 04 -> Installations and Upgrades ->
Solaris -> Oracle (or search for 51032535)
I will keep you posted should we decide to make 6.40 kernel available for MaxDB.

Will there also be a client for MaxDB? I saw on the PAM that this is not planned - just curious...

Hello Markus
Some unlucky coincidences prevent us from providing a 6.40 kernel for MaxDB:
1) 6.40 kernel requires MaxDB-client 7.5.
2) First MaxDB version supported for Solarix x64 is 7.6, this also applies to the kernel.
3) Starting with version 7.6, MaxDB devlopment has moved away from using precompiler technology for interfacing between MaxDB client and C-executables like SAP kernel
4) 6.40 kernel uses MaxDB precompiler for interfacing with the MaxDB client.
For these reasons, the efforts for being able to use 7.6 client libs for the 6.40 kernel are quite big.

I see
Interestingly enough, the Linux 7.6 versions has the precompiler (lib) included:
/sapdb > find . -name "pcr"
./programs/runtime/7300/lib/libpcr.so
./programs/runtime/7301/lib/libpcr.so
./programs/runtime/7500/lib/lib64/libpcr.so
Can't it be "just be built"?

Hi Markus
The world is moving forwards, not backwards. This is especially true for new SAP platforms like Solaris x64. As we never built 7.5 on Solaris x64, the above libs (7.3, 7.5) are not available for Solaris x64.This is exactly the point where our internal discussion stalled. Building a client lib is halfway building the database. Plus we talk about long term support for all this.
The good thing is that the NW04s based products really seem to be a preferred update target for our customers.
Greetings
Manfred
