What does the UPD, UP2, SPO work processes do?

What is the recommended number or is there any guidelines on how to decide on how many is optmal?

Hi Unni,

If you want to know whether the configuration you have is correct or not, when you go to SM50 of that server click on CPU to see the CPU usage of individual work process. If you want to check on UPD work process usage, check the CPU time of all UPD work processes, Atleast one of the work process should generally show 00:00 secs which means CPU is not used. That means users are getting the request solved immeidately without waiting in the queue.

The other way to check how many users are waiting is Goto SM51 and see the queue information

4.6C: SM51: GOTO -> QUEUE INFORMATION.

6.20: SM51: GOTO -> SERVER INFORMATION -> QUEUE INFORMATION.

This will list current/maximum requests waiting in that queue. This is one method of identifying and increasing the work processes.

For 4 dialog work process , u need atleast 1 V1 upadate

UPD/2 is related to update process.

Easy way to describe UPD and UP2 is if you run dialog transaction it will use UPD and if you run background job then it is not a critical update so it would go to UP2. -

This is from understanding perspective

In actual it is related to function module that sends the data for update. In the function module you can specify if this needs V1(UPD) update or V2(UP2) update. So the developer who designed the function module will decide that based on the business requirement whether it is V1(UPD) or V2(UP2).
