Oracle upgrade 10g to 11g using export and import

Any one tell me how I upgrade oracle database in SAP ECC 6.0 using export and

import method.

Please follow the upgrade guide provided by SAP and get the upgrade done with a minimum downtime of 3 - 4 hours.

For Oracle 11.2.0.3 upgrade system requirement for Solaris.

I thin it required Solaris 11 but my system running solaris 10 update 3

How I upgrade from Solaris 10 to 11 without current environment change

means no data loss.

Hi Manas,

your question is not clear.

If you want to upgrade the database only, you don't have to use import / export.

E.g. upgrading from Oracle 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.3. In this case you have to do a databae upgrade, There are specific SAP guides to do that.

If you want to upgrade the database AND migrate the system / database to new hardware you have to make a system copy. There are two different options. Homogenuous Systemcopy means that OS and DB does not change. Heterogenuous systemcopy means OS and/or DB changes.

E.g. a migration from AIX on DB2 to Windows x64 on Oracle.

When doing a system copy you can do the upgrade in one step. At first you have to export the source database (e.g. ORA 10.2.0.4). Then install the database software for the target database (e.g. ORA 11.2.0.3) and import the data stack to the new 11.2.0.3 database. Have a look at the system copy guides for further details.

Hello

You install the Oracle 11G software on a new file system /oracle/SID/11203 so there is no downtime required at this stage

Secondly there is NO need to uninstall SAP or Oracle.

The standard practice suggested by SAP is to upgrade Oracle using the DBUA.

But if you like to do using export and import then the downtime requirement is going to be more but you get the advantage of a DB reorg.

In any case you have to use BR*Tools for export and import.

Hi Mannas,

    It is very simple . You are going to do a homogenous system . perform the following.

1. Take a export of your source system which is in oracle 10.

2. Install oracle 11 in your target system

3. Import the data exported from the source sytem in the target system.

If the source and target are same.

1.Take a backup of the source system.

2. take export of the source system.

3. Uninstall SAP and Oracle in the source system.

4. Install oracle 11 in the source system.

5. import the data

Pretty simple.

BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUP IN PLACE

Hi Manas,

I meant that you need to completely remove all the SAP and ORACLE Settings using SAPINST tool after taking an export  from the source system.

The exported data will be of database independent and Operating system independent.

Then you need to use again the SAPINST tool, to install SAP services and  Oracle Services again .

If you are very familiar with oracle upgrade, you can go ahead with Oracle Upgrade as suggested by Martin ( see last para) .

If not, safe and easy way for oracle upgrade is to do a system export and import. As well as you can have DB Re-org ( Size of the DB will be reduced) about 10% to 35 % ... with no data loss.

Hi Manas,

If you just want to upgrade oracle database using the oracle utility expdp/impdp you can use following steps

1) Take a full export logical backup of your database.

2) Install new oracle home with a sample database.

3) Create tablespaces which are present in old database.

4) Import the logical backup of your old database.

5) then point your sap to new database by setting the new oracle home.
