Dear Experts
There is a requirement from client that UNSPSC should be mapped in material master. After researching I got to know one way of doing it is mapping it on material group in material master. But we already have material groups created in system which are being used for reporting purposes in DW. Thus changing them now to accomodate UNSPSC code does not look feasible. Request your expert advice as to where else can we map the code in material master.
Any help would be appreciated.
UNSPSC ((United Nations Standard Products and Services Code) is a classification, so why not using the classification for this purpose?

My experience with UNSPSC mapping of material master recently is to have it in classification. 4 levels of classification. Had to be done manually by the material master cataloguer.

Dear Jurgen
Can you please elaborate as to how use classification for the UNSPSC mapping in material master.
Dear James
We are also using external material group for mapping thus changing them now does not look too bright. Can we use EAN/UPC field in basic data 1 to map the UNSPSC. Do you foresee any challenge in it?
Thanks in Advance

The problem with using the ean/UPC field is its.really meant to handle the different types of UPC codes, and based on the ean chosen the system will do a system check against the digits, for example if UPC is chosen it will check if there are 10 or 11, while another the international UPC will check for 12.... If all You are going to have all the same digit lengths for unspc, then maybe you could configure a unspc option with the digit check.
Jurgens point also maybe easier to implement for you. You would create a class to hold your data, and then a characteristic called unspc , where you make it either free text or a digit field.
Problem with that approach is it doesn't have great reporting... You would have to use cl30n or develop one.
I've seen companies use the external material group, which is seperate then the standard material group.
