Hi Ramesh

Kernel is the runtime environment for the sap. We can say it as a technical infrastructure for the sap. What ever action we do from sap i mean via GUI there will be a command executed from kernel(OS).For example if you release a transport request or if you do a import tp is the executable which executes from os level. I will give you some of the familiar executables...

sapcar (for uncaring files)

sapdba

startdb

stopdb

dpmon

saposcol

sapxpg (for external programs)

sapevt (for event driven programs)

I will explain you with a simple example why kernel upgrade needs, Let us assume that while applying support package system needs to uncar some files which need a latest version of executable sapcar. So it leads to kernel upgrade. SAP informs to upgrade the kernel if it(support pack) need any updated executable while applying support pack.

While applying patches/Add on's to upgrade the kernel.

During SAP upgradation or unicode upgrade

If any executable got old you may required to chage that particular kernel or else upgrade all the kernel

Hi,

kernel consist of all executable files.When you are applying patches we need to upgrade our kernel version.

Inorder to avoid conflicts.
