Batch number assignment - internal / external overlap

Dear experts,

I´ m facing a problem regarding the batch number assignment. We have migrated external batch numbers and using an internal batch number assignment for the creation of new batches during goods receipt and order release. The internal number range reached now the first external interval and this creates the following error when relasing an order or posting a GR:

Batch 00000xxxxx already exists for material 1000000

Message no. M3556

Our immediate solution was to skip the external interval and set the current batch number on the next free number, so the problem is solved for the moment, but will come up in the future again. Could anyone of you help me on this?
