Should i always update my SAP Systems to the latest Windows version Supported by SAP???

Scenario:

SAP Netweaver 7.0 ABAP AS

Windows 2003

Oracle 10g

Hardware:

  1. Dell PowerEdge R910
  2. 128GB Ram
  3. 4TB HD

Considerations:

  1. NEVER had been some downtime of SAP Systems due to Windows 2003 since year 2007
  2. Since 2007 we have 200 Users and i dont think its gonna change in the next 5 years
  3. This is a central Installation
  4. There's no perfomance issues

If all its going well, why should i update???

Any comments will be appreciated.!

Hi Marcos,

There are normally 4 types of forces pushing you to upgrade your os and/or db.

1. SAP's release requirements (Newer versions not supporting old versions of os and/or db)

For example, NetWeaver 7.3 requires Windows 2008 as minimum OS version.

2. End of maintenance for os and/or db by vendor

For example, Oracle 10 is not supported by Oracle and you should upgrade it to Oracle 11 and you should check Windows 2003 from Microsoft (Check http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3198)

3. For getting benefit of new releases

For example the benefits provided by Oracle 11 and Windows 2008

4. Hardware or 3rd party software requirements (like backup server)

For example, new H/W's and latest versions of 3rd party softwares may not work with old os and/or dbs

Hi Marcos,

Yes, of corse!

As long you have ten years old hardware you may still run your Windows Server 2003.

But 128 GB of memory - there is no good chance to use it.

You will probably able to install Windows Server 2003 on it, but as soon as you try to utilize it with the ABAP Server you will hit some archtectural limitations which will destabilize your system.

For more information see note http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1316558

kind regards

Peter

PS: Oracle 10 is out of regular support as far as I know
