Hello,

I'm using MaxDb 7.8.02.21 on Windows 2008 server.

The database is mostly running correctly, but sometimes "Emergency shutdown" occurs.

Can you help me to identify where is the source of this problem ?

What does it mean:

trace message of SAPDBMem_RawAllocator CommandCacheAllocator:CommandCacheAllocator : allocator pointer in chunk header overwritten

and how to prevent it ?

Mmmh, does no one knows how to get to the bottom of this issue? At the moment the database crashes at least once a week on our production server. The MaxDB installation on our test infrastructure remains stable, so it's maybe related to some performance things.

At the bug report #1242614 nothing happens 😞

Hello Sven,

after migration to the version 7.7.07.33 this problem didn't occurred again. So, my advice is, to  use newest 7.7.x.x version of MaxDB instead of 7.8.x.x.

There is nothing I'd like to do better than downgrading a production database

So I have to swallow the bitter pill and pray, the server gets stable again after the downgrade.

I wonder if this issue is as rare as no one of the devs take care of it.

Hello Sven,

sorry for the late reply. You are the second person I am aware of who is facing this bug, so it is not a widespread issue. But of course we should try to fix this.

Let me suggest the following:

1. Upload a corresponding "Heap...dmp" file like the "Heap20130617000233882550.dmp" written in the knldiag file you had attached. Let me know, if you need a Sapmats container for upload and I can generate you one.

The idea is to further analyze the error cause and speed up PTS1242614.

2. As a workaround, please disable SharedSQL by setting the 'UseSharedSQL' parameter to 'no' and let me know if this helps.

Hi,

We also observed the same error in MaxDB 7.8.02.31 three days after a SAP kernel 7.20 update from patch level 401 to patch level 440, on RedHat Enterprise Linux 5.

For the moment it only occurred once. The MaxDB database is running with UseSharedSQL=YES.

Ok, you might want to report this via SAP OSS ticket as well (to have the crash checked), but otherwise my recommendation above remains valid (disable UseSharedSQL if this occurs more frequently...).

Hi Thorsten,

thanks for your post. It would be great if you could provide me a Sapmats container that I can use to upload the Heapdump.

On the other hand we switched off the UseSharedSQL and we'll see, if it will ease the pain.

Thank you for uploading the Heap Dump - I have forwarded the file to our developer. Unfortunately, we are not much closer in identifying the error cause. We will continue to look into this and keep track of all crashes with this symptom, so if anybody else is experiencing the same crash, please let me know.

In the meantime, I recommend to disable the parameter UseSharedSQL for all affected database instances.

we're facing the same problem. Our installation of MaxDB 7.8.02 (Build 035-121-247-550) crashes at irregular intervals. The server is running CentOS 6.4 (64bit) on a dual-Xeon with 32GB RAM (let me know if you need more informations). Attached you'll find an extract of the KnlMsgArchive.

I'm not sure whether you need additional logs or not. Please let me know, how I can help to localise the problem.

Hi Dusan,

I would suggest the following:

1. If possible, try upgrading your MaxDB from 7.8.02.21 to the latest available release.

2. Make sure to download the Database Analyzer parameter check file and verify that all database parameters are set as recommended.

3. If you have performed steps 1&2 above and the issue persists, let me know and we will further analyze the callstack.

Hello Thorsten,

I did not upated MaxDb engine until now, but when I run "DB Analyzer" tool, there was an error, that I'm using log volume overwrite mode. So, I deactivated this mode and now I'm testing if it solved my problem. I will let you know the result. If the problem persists I will update DB engine.

after "Log overwrite mode" deactivation, the database crashed again. So, I made DB engine update to the currently newest version  7.8.02.28. Now it seams, that it is working correctly. I will inform you after longer testing time.

Hello Dusan,

ok, just keep in mind to also run the "Database Analyzer configuration check". To do so, just download the special configuration file from the scn section (should be located near the MaxDB database downloads) and then start the Analyzer with that config file.

I performed "Database Analyzer" check with original configuration file (installed during DB engine installation) and also with configuration file downloaded from SCN download page. There was no warnings in both cases.

Hello,

the error and "Emergency shutdown" occurred again. There was updated DB engine to the actual version and "DB analyzer" said that there are no warnings cording DB parameters, but the database crashed (2x already). I attached fragment from database error log file.

Please, help me to find the source of problem.

Hello Dusan,

sorry for my late reply...

The crash occurs in the SharedSQL cache allocation, so as a workaround you could set the parameter UseSharedSQL to 'NO'.

This crash is so far unknown and therefore we would be interested in further analysing it.

Please call 'diag_pack' from a dbmcli session:
'dbmcli -d <db_name> -u <user> diag_pack'. This should create a 'diagpkg.tgz' archive with the database log files.

In addition, please include all 'Heap....dmp' files from the rundirectory as we will need them for the analysis.

Just upload the data to the following 'Sapmats'-container (remove the line break from the following https link):

I uploaded requested files.

We made database engine downgrade (install version 7.7.07.33 and using data pump we transfered data from 7.8.02.28). DB instance with version 7.7.07.33 is running more then 24 hours without crash.

Please, inform me about results of your analyze.

Hello Dusan,

I have created a problem tracking message 'PTS' with id 1242614. You can track the progress at http://maxdb.sap.com/webpts (go to advanced search and enter the PTS#).

If that database was used in an SAP environment (I think not...), let me know, because then we could search the corresponding developer work trace of the application server for hints about what was executed at crash time.

If you have any idea what was executed from your application when the database crashed, please also let me know.

you are right, the database is not running in the SAP environment.

To have overview what statements are executing on the Database instance I'm sending you our text log files. There are different text files - each for separate database session. I hope it will help you.

It's interesting that after database migration (downgrade) from version 7.8.02.28 to version 7.7.07.33, the problem did not occurred again. The database is running 7 days without "Emergency shutdown" crash. Maybe this will be helpful for developers to identify the problem.

However, the latest Heap Dump file I have got from you is of 10.12.2012, 15:18. Do you have any log files matching that time stamp or do you have further heap dumps occuring at 17.12.2012?
