Hi.
I’d like your assistance on a question regarding supported Hardware for SAP systems running on Linux
Our current Hardware is x3850 x5/x3950 X5 (7143) according to IBM System x and BladeCenter Servers Compatibility with SAP Applications and Linux
http://www.ibm.com/solutions/sap/us/en/landing/systemx_for_linux.html.
We are using as OS Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 for AMD64 & Intel EM64T (RHEL5-x86_64) and DB2 for LUW v9.7
When reading Inst. SAP Solution Manager 7.1 SR1 Linux - IBM DB2 for LUW it mentions on page 24
Database instance:
The following hardware architecture is supported:
DB2 V9.1:
IA32, IA64, PowerPC, and AMD64
DB2 V9.5 and DB2 V9.7:
PowerPC and AMD64
For more information, see the DB2-specific requirements for your database version at:
http://www.ibm.com/software/data/db2/udb/sysreqs.html
CAUTION The installation of an SAP system on Intel® 64 is not supported. |
What does mean SAP system is not supported on Intel 64, when that hardware is listed as compatible for SAP systems on IBM site
Thanks!
Hi Martin, I believe this is just sloppy wording on their part and that by "Intel 64" they actually mean the IA64 (Itanium) platform, even though according to Intel's own website Intel 64 is the same thing as AMD64 (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/ia-32-intelr-64-ia-64-architecture-mean). Since even the part you quoted specifies that they do support AMD64 (which is AMD's name for x86-64 and is what "Intel 64" really means), your hardware is indeed compatible. Probably the majority of modern servers running SAP actually run on this hardware. Hopefully the notes that Dipam mentions can clear it up even more for you.
To recap, the relevant platforms listed on page 24 in your quote are:
IA32 - 32bit x86 platform (what most PCs up to a few years ago ran on)
AMD64 - 64bit x86 platform (also called x86-64 or Intel 64 amongst others) -> this is your platform
IA64 - Itanium 64bit platform: a completely different processor architecture, not compatible with IA32/IA64
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Please check the following OSS notes
Note 171356 - SAP software on Linux: Essential information
Note 171380 - Linux: Released IBM hardware (Intel and AMD processors)
Please verify with PAM on sap market place.
Regards,
Dipam
