FINBASIS patch upgrade

Former Member

Hi Experts

We are presently on FINBASIS patch level 13 and need to upgrade the same to 18.

I am a little confused about it.

I mean shall I do it using SPAM or SAINT.

As per what I know is we use SPAM to upgrade to current patch level and SAINT to install a new Add-on.

Please guide as on what tool shall I use (SPAM or SAINT) to upgrade FINBASIS patch from 13 to 18.

Also, what are the dependencies for doing the same.

The patch size what I downloaded from SMP was just around 1MB.

Please help.

Thanks

Harikrishna

Hello,

You can use SPAM as well as the SUM tool to apply the support package. SAINT cannot be used to

apply support packages only.

You can use the Solution Manager to calculate the dependencies and download the packages.

For SUM you will have to povide stack.xml file.

## you can check the dependencies of a package on SMP also. If you do not use the Solman, you have to take care of the dependencies manually.

Hi

I am not using SOLMAN, I have not used it before so I not sure about the same.

Also, can I jump direct from 13 to 18 or do I need to apply 14, 15, 16, 17 and then 18.

Thanks

Hello,

ABAP Support Packages are not cumulative. So you need to apply from 14 to 18. It can be done by defining a single queue from 14 to 18.

Hi Gaurav

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I am not SOLMAN and SUM, I am going to do it using SPAM.

Can please highlight some prerequisites/dependencies other than downtime etc.

Thanks

Hello

Whats your FINBASIS release??  You can check dependencies for the packages in the SMP. Since you are using SPAM only and not planning to use the solman, you have to take care of the

dependencies manually.

Hi Gaurav

Release is 600. Can you please tell me any dependencies regarding the same.

As far as I know, we need to take downtime.

Also the size of the patches are only 2 MB each.

Thanks

Hello,

I could see that patch 18 requires SAP_BW 700 SP24. So if you do not have SAP_BW 700 SP24...you have to update it too. You can include it in the same queue. Now SAP_BW will also have

its prerewuiesites, you need to meet them too.

## Here I am discussing the dependencies on the other software components. Please let me know if you want some other info.

Hello Harikrishna,

Once the sofrware dependencies are taken care of, you can do the following to enhance the support package runtime:

There will a minimum downtime during patching which you cannot avoid.

1. Run DB staticstics before patching. (Note: 588668)
Oracle Dictionary Statistics and System Statistics should be
refreshed prior to any upgrade as follows (Note: 838725)

  brconnect -u / -c -f stats -t oradict_stats (for Oracle Dictionary
  objects)
  brconnect -u / -c -f stats -t system_stats (for system statistics)

2. Update to the latest R3trans and tp version on SMP.

3. Increase the "Number of parallel processes per R3trans" to 4 in SPAM.
Please refer to the following notes for more information:
     1127194 - R3trans import with parallel processes
     1309506 - SPAM/SAINT with parallel R3trans

4. You can skip the generation of programs during the import.
To influence/skip the generation of ABAP programs and screens,
choose Extras on the initial screen of the SPAM and then choose
   the following:

a) Settings -> Import Queue -> ABAP/Screen generation
    check it as "Never"

b) Ignore Generation Errors (this will Ignore generation errors
    during import)

5. Oracle Patches and Mergefixes
All mandatory interim patches and in particular the
   current  Optimizer
   Mergefix should be applied
   (Note: 1137346 - Oracle 10.2.0: Patches/patch collections for
    Oracle  10.2.0.)

6. Database parameters
The parameters should be set according to SAP Note: 830576
It is of special importance to activate fixes using the parameter
   _fix_control.

Also please refer to the following notes which may be useful:

1223360 - Composite SAP Note: Performance optimization during import

Hi Sharma,

As you are upgrading to same release you can use spam. Download patches starting from 14 to 18 and apply patches through spam.

Alternatively you can use SUM tool. For using sum tool you can go through http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-25113
