SUM Problems with Java Enterprise Portal Upgrade

Former Member

I am trying to upgrade our Netweaver (Java only) stack from 7.0 to 7.3

using SUM. The kernel patch level is at 179. We have several Netweaver

instances running on one server (3 PI instances, and 3 EP instances).

I'm starting with our development enterprise portal server, and an error

occurs during the second step of "Specify Credentials". I correctly

supply the <sid>adm user name and password.

Afterwards, another screen, appears with a message stating the user

credentials for the listed instances do not match. After verifying that

the two match, I click the "Next" button, and the following screen is shown.

I did notice before clicking the "Next" button that the instance numbers

listed ( 1 and 0 - don't know that this matters) were not the instance

numbers to our development enterprise portal, but actually the instance

numbers to our Quality enterprise portal. The instances to our

development EP are 8 and 9.

These instances, as mentioned before, are on the same server.

Terry

Many thanks to everyone that has posted on this thread.  I know it's been some time since I've checked in, or responded (more projects than time to complete).  For the time being, I had to stop the management agents for the instance that had the SUM confused:

sapcontrol -nr 00 -function StopService

sapcontrol -nr 01 -function StopService

Once this was done, the SUM tool moved past this issue, and on to others typical for an upgrade.

If someone has a better solution for this issue, I'm open for suggestions.

Also, I really don't know whom to give credit here, but I'll be glad to award points.  Please be honest, I want to give credit where it is due.

Terry

Hello Terry,

up to you whom to give credits, but if you want some help, I just reviewed the thread and would suggest you to give "Helpful Answer" credits for Boris, Paul, me and Sriram, as all of us contributed to some extend to have your problem solved.

By the way, you asked for a better solution. I'm afraid I can only help you further if I have access to the logs of the failed phase.

Best regards,

Hi Terry,

Could you please check the following SAP notes -

1563660     "OS user password does not work, please reenter" or "FAIL:
Invalid Credentials" during EHPI / Upgrade
1565645     SAP composite note: sapcontrol

Please make sure that you have only the necessary profiles in the
profile directory and remove the unnecessary files.

Once you do all the changes, please restart the sapstartsrv service.

Also, check the permissions of the files in the kernel directory.

Terry,

Few points that may help you:

1. As long as you start the SUM tool in <sid>adm environment, the extract location of the SUM tool is immaterial.

2. Ensure that the SAP Host Agent is working on the instance as SUM tool uses this to validate the <sid>adm credentials.

3. Refer OSS Note 927637 - Web service authentication in sapstartsrv as of Release 7.00 for authentication issues while working with SUM.

Srinivas,

Thanks for your reply, but we have already looked at that note, with no luck.

Hello Terry,

can you please paste the content of the log file showing the current error?

Well, I can put in the credentials for one of the other instances on this server, and it seems to get one step further - here's the screenshot:

Also, a followup question.  Does it matter where the SUM tool is extracted?  We have it in /usr/sap/upgrade/7.03/SUM.

Hello Terry,

answering your question:"Does it matter where the SUM tool is extracted?"

- no, it does not. You can put it anywhere you wish.

Does the problem persists?

Hi Terry,

Please note, If the OS user credentials for any of the instances in your system do not match the

ones you already entered for the primary application server instance,

you have to specify the correct credentials for each such instance on a

subsequent screen.

Make sure you enter the password for the <sapsid>adm user and choose Next.

I have also found an SAP note regarding SUM calls sapcontrol without user credentials error which mayhelp resolve the issue.  please kindly refer to OSS Note 1600846.

SUM calls sapcontrol to perform some operations with the system. sapcontrol

requires user (<sid>adm) and password for some of these operations. For

others user authentication is not required. This depends on the

configuration of the startup service (sapstartsrv), see SAP note 927637.

hope this helps.

Hi Terry,

It looks as if the SUM has proposed an instance number that was already used by another system on the host ... can you please post the screenshot again, as it seems distorted.
