In healthcare there are different workflows so identifying bottles in these different work flows are different. There are the workflow areas for floor nursing and then there are the specialty areas all that have completely different work flows from floor nursing. I specialize in OR workflows that resemble more manufacturing workflow. We have improved on patient throughput issues by first using the case tracking board data to identify where the delays are most frequent and the pareto 80/20 rule shows up in the pre- operative process which is the front end of the other two processes (Intra-op and post-op processes). The processing area (intra-op acts like a pulley system) so if you make improvements to this area in delays then the lead times have to be adjusted in the pre-op areas and the outcome is a pile up in post-op of patients so the hospital bed management systems needs to be involved.
The other specialty areas that have different workflows from the OR is the ER, PICU, NICU. any of the CU units all have different workflow so identifying bottlenecks in these areas are different also
