Dear Gurus.

I am upgrading the SP Stack using SUM on ECC6 EHP5.

It is first time that I see tjhat upgrade tool run SGEN on shadow instance!

Fro what? Does it mean that post upgrade genereation is not longer required?

Hello members,

We are also facing same problem.

In Shadow run for SUM 17 PL07, we select NOT to run the SGEN on shadow. Still it is running with 3 dialogs.

SUBMOD_GEN_ABAP_LOAD/RUN_SGEN_GENER8

We raised SAP OSS, SAP might have to fix it.

Amit

Hello Vladimir,

that's correct, now SUM has the option to run SGEN during the shadow instance. You can choose on the begging of the upgrade at which point you'll run SGEN. See the selection options in phase PREP_CONFIGURATION/INITSUBST:

Choose an execution strategy for transaction SGEN.

01)  -  Do not start ABAP load generation during the upgrade.

02)  -  Generate ABAP loads on shadow system during uptime.

03)  -  Generate ABAP loads on shadow system during uptime and start asynchronously in post downtime.

Execution mode: Do not start ABAP load generation during the upgrade.

Now customers have a new option

Hi Thomas!

Unfortunately i did not find this selection screen, but SGEN has been run at Shadow Instance,

Does it mean I don't need to run SGEN after upgrade completion?

Thank you

Vladimit!

Hi Vladimir,

actually it depends on how many requests were imported after the upgrade (SPAU and adjustments). We've observed many customers opting to run SGEN again after the upgrade when a lot of requests (or objects) are imported. If there are few, then it's not necessary, as few programs will compile here and there.

Of course, if this is a productive upgrade and you don't want the end users complaining AND you have enough time to run SGEN afterwards, do it

Hello Vladimit,

Yes some times those options will not come. for me also during QA update with SUM 1.0 SP04 it has given options but during PRD update SUM 1.0 SP05 did not received options and sgen ran on shadow instance.

careful during sgen system permanence will go down. i would suggest run sgen once again.

Thanks,

Venkat

As from SUM 1.0 SP03, SGEN has the option to be run on the shadow instance:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/94414635/3/New-Features

This is part of the Near-Zero Downtime strategy for upgrades:

http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-32544

What's the SUM version you're running?

Hello Tomas,

I know screen which you have provided and i got all options except sgen (but i have recieved sgen option during Quality update), not sure why it did not show options during prd update.

even if you see Vladimir screen in that also SGEN option is not showing.

I have used SUM 1.0 SP04 for QA, SUM 1.0 SP05 for PRD.

Thanks,

Venkat

Yeah I'm trying to figure out why those options were not available for you.

As soon as I get something I'll update this thread.

Tomas,

Did you find it already, we have the same problem in SP05, we don't want to run SGEN in the shadow for performance and for diskspace reasons. But SUM does it everytime without asking. The problem is not in other SP's only SP05.

Kind Regards,
