The purpose of these adapters is to convert the COBOL Copy Book Format into XML format so thatit helps in integration with XI.

You can get the description of these adapters in
service.sap.com/XI --> SAP XI in Detail --> Connectivity --> Connectivity in 3.0 --> iWay
Of course, you need to have an OSS ID to access the above site..

I hope they might be used for Industry Standards such as CIDX or PIDX (for main frame) if you need to interace with cobol applications...i hope they are not infact the technical names/types (Mainframe/Transaction) for any adapters..maybe based on ur application ppl use these context
