System Upgrade Licenses

Hi All,

I would like to know about Licenses in SAP. If we upgrade the system from ERP6.0  EHP4 to EHP5 and NertWeaver 7.0 EHP1 to 7.0 EHP2, we need to apply the license again or not necessary.

Thanks and Regards

Pavan

If you are just upgrading your system , you need not apply new Licenses as your SID , hardware key remains same .

But you need maintainence license to upgrade your system .

If you migrate hardware  the "Hardware" key will change and yes, you will need to request a new license.

Hi Pavan,

U are talking about OS migration , right??

In OS/DB migration , you need a migration key .

Well , SAP License key is Combination of hardware key and SID , anything change you have to request a new license key .

First question doesn't mentions that you're goingto change your H/W. If you're going to change it then you've to apply for an additional license for the same SID.(Only Hardware Key changes)

Hi Heseyin,

Sorry its my mistake. We are not migrating Hardware but we are going from server 2003 to server 2008 and SQL server 2005 to sql server 2008.

For this we need to apply new license (or) not necessary.

IF you're not changing the Physical Server, but only the OS & DB, you don't have to apply for a new license.

The "Harware" key under windows is actually a "Software" key. A new installation of windows will definitely require applying for a new license.

Note 174911 - Determining the hardware key (customer key)

Note says,

On each platform, a character string is determined, which uniquely identifies the hardware. The hardware key is determined on the basis of this character string. The hardware key always has 11 characters, and the first character is a letter, while the remaining 10 characters are digits. The letter is a check sum for the number that is used to check whether or not the hardware key is valid.

Which means and afaik if you don't change the H/W it will be same.

Hi Huseyin,

Note says,

WINNT  -  A string that depends on the NT installation is determined

Only Windows uses a hardware key that does NOT depend on the hardware. A new installation of Windows definitely causes the hardware key to change.

Hmm, For Windows, I'm not sure about Windows. I talked in general.

Thanx for warning.

Hi Pavan,

If you refer to the licensing you do via SLICENSE in ABAP, and /nwa in Java based system, then answer is NO, you don't have to re-apply the existing license after an EHP upgrade.

If you refer to licensing done with local SAP office, the answer again is NO, you get the upgrades free-of-charge if you're paying your maintenance fee.
