Just to add, there is an error message in the log file as well:
Unable to locate the fci xml schema setting that may cause serious errors in the web service.
The compare operation in Word failed that is likely caused by a message box. Please go to e:\fci\temp\634838158766590626 to investigate.

This was resolved by doing the following:
1) Within MS Word – File > Word Options > Add-Ins > Manage: XML Schemas > fci.xsd > Schema Settings > Deselect “Changes Affect Current User Only” – This required Basis to have the proper permissions. Also installation of Visual basic was necessary. Both these had to be performed by BASIS team.
